Montessori Earth Science Bundle
created by Marissa Frisk and Leah Walsh
This bundle includes:
1. Weather Cutting Strips (M): Print and cut into strips. Have them available with scissors, a bowl, and envelopes for the cut pieces. Find Leah’s cutting envelopes in her shop under “extras.”
2. Weather Pin Punching (M): Print onto construction paper and quarter it. Add them to your Language shelf with a large pushpin (or other tool) and a felt mat.
3. Weather Writing (L): Print and laminate word strips and have available with documentation sheets. Children can draw and label the weather.
4. Types of Weather Booklet (M): Print colored master on cardstock and laminate. Cut into 9 pages and assemble with a 1/2” book ring. Offer child student sheets whole. They can color, write, cut and staple into booklet.
5. Water Cycle Spinning Wheel (M): Print colored master on cardstock, laminate and cut out. Using a paper fastener, fasten spinner to center (use a pin puncher to make the hole). Print blanks on cardstock. Child colors, cuts, glues and assembles this visual of the water cycle.
6. Rainbow Color Mixing (M): Print on cardstock, cut into “cards” and staple in corner with one staple. On a tray, offer these packets, watercolor paints (can be a full palette or just the primary colors), water cup, white plate and paintbrush. Students rip to separate pages, mix the colors noted on the top of the page and paint. These generally dry pretty quickly - cut shape out, layer on top of each other and glue together to make a rainbow.
7. Rainbow Poem Booklet (M): Print master on xerox paper. Fold and half, then in half the opposite way. The first page should be “Rainbow, rainbow in the sky.” Cutting paper to 8.5”x5.5” and using a booklet stapler make a cover is nice but not necessary. Offer pre folded booklets for children to illustrate.
8. Land and Water Forms Playdough Mats/Coloring Pages (M): For Playdough: Print on cardstock, laminate and cut. Offer blue and brown Playdough. Children cover water with blue, land with brown. Offer in pairs so child can see opposites. For coloring: offer packets with crayons/watercolors/markers, scissors and a stapler to make into a booklet.
9. Geology Vocabulary Cards (L): Print these onto cardstock and laminate to use as a reference.
10. Gemstones Cutting Strips (L): Print and cut into strips. Have them available with scissors, a bowl, and envelopes for the cut pieces. Find Leah’s cutting envelopes under “extras.”
11. Gemstones Scavenger Hunt (L): The colored labels can be printed, laminated, and hung around the room. Child can walk around the room with the documentation sheet on a clipboard to write the words as they are found. Alternatively they can be used with the Moveable Alphabet. We do an exercise called “Read. Spell. Write.”
12. My Gem Book (L): The children can color, cut, staple and read this gem themed book. There are two different versions for you. I recommend laminating a completed copy as an example.
13. Geology Lab (L): This file includes materials for setting up a “lab” for your geology study. It includes a sign, a banner, an ID badge for the children to make and put on a string to wear, a documentation sheet for rock observations, and color cards to reference when filling out the sheet. I recommend setting this area up with an assortment of rocks and gems, a microscope or magnifying glass, a scale, drawing materials, and a reference book.
14. Gemstone Game (L): Print, laminate all pages, and tape together the game board. Pair with dice and a couple of game pieces. The children take turns traveling through the cave collecting rocks and gems. If you have gems that match the ones included then consider incorporating them into the game as well.
